EDUCATION: San Juan Nature Walks
SJMA’s naturalist-led walks will take place from 10-12 on Fridays this summer. How does this support our public lands? When people slow down and understand the little things that make a place special, that place becomes valuable to them. Training is on the morning of May 30 near Haviland Lake. Even a fledgling naturalist can assist on these walks. Naturalists under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Training includes an introduction to local flora, fauna, geology, clouds, water ecology, etc. You don't need to know everything to guide a walk. Each walk will have a "veteran naturalist" with another 3 spots available for either new naturalists or other veterans.
June hikes will be held on the Haviland Lake trail system. Meet at the winter gate ~200 yards from the highway. Walks in July, and August, meet at the upper Andrews Lake parking lot (the trailer parking lot).
